Giving Birth Kills Lots of Women. It Need Not

The statistics are undeniable that many women die just before, during or soon after a pregnancy. It is very obvious women with better health care are less likely to die. In underdeveloped countries, childbirth is one of the leading causes of death.

In the U.S. about 700 women die each year in child birth. Those who deal with this issue say most of these could be prevented. The two of the reasons so many die are religion and politics.

Many more poor women die in childbirth than do non poor. It does not take a genius to figure out that spending money on health care is one of the ways to reduce the deaths. But, if the women who are pregnant do not have money for health care it needs to be provided by other tax payers. Politics stands guarding the door of this solution. Public health care is fought by the political right. They are not concerned about the number of deaths in child birth.

Religious groups make it as difficult as they can to get abortions. One way women come up the the money they need for health care is by controlling the time between births. One of the ways to do this is abortion. By making abortion more and more difficult to obtain more women have health problems. It surprised me to learn there are still women performing at home surgical abortions. Infections from these still turn up in hospitals.

I've been reading about difficulties women have had in Catholic hospitals when they have emergencies during pregnancies. The married author of a book I am reading was early in her second pregnancy when the tissue surrounding the fetus broke and she began bleeding profusely. Unfortunately, her ambulance took her to a Catholic hospital. She did not understand why she was allowed to continue to bleed in her room. Later she learned this was because religion prevented doctors from removing the fetus and stopping the bleeding until her life was endanger. It was not until she began to lose consciousness they were allowed by religion to remove the fetus and stop her blood loss. She lost about 40% of her blood.

Hopefully more rational approaches to health care will replace political and religious ones. Then fewer women will die in childbirth.

  1. 700 women die each year in the USA from childbirth, you say. Free healthcare for all is your answer. (Or is it just those who don't buy healthcare or get it from their employer?) How much does your solution cost, per life saved? How many of those 700 women had health insurance? One should have an inquiring mind about these things, right?

How many tens of thousands of people die in car accidents every year? The answer is to stop driving. Take away the cars and melt them down. Problem solved.

How many tens of thousands of people die from heart disease every year? Put everyone on a fitness routine and diet - make it mandatory or they get the jail cell where we will make sure they exercise and eat right. Problem solved.

How many tens of thousands of people die from electrocution every year? Ban electricity. Problem solved.

Applying your logic, you could save hundreds of thousands of people every year!

    1. Matt-- Your comment is reflects exactly what I have said here forever. You are not pro life, you are pro fetus. Former Congressman Barney Franks said decades ago, "Pro life people are for life until a baby is born. After that they don't care."

    2. how long must we put up with this nonsense. BTW, if I recall correctly, B. Frank got into trouble for running a homosexual call service out of his congressional office. great authority, there.

Old chap, as you like to say, your memory is not what it used to be. That is not true. He had a partner for a while who was a male prostitute and lined up some work our of Barney's home. He was kicked out shortly after.

    1. I'll grant your point. my memory is definitely not what it was when I was younger. did you have to look it up or did you remember?

    2. I decided to test my memory against yours. turns out that there is more to Frank and the homosexual affair than you apparently recalled. there is also Frank's role in the Fannie and Freddie Mac scandal. you can look it up if you prefer to do so.

  3. Unknown -- I remembered it had to do with a boyfriend, not Frank himself. But I did not remember the details and had to look that up. I had a 10-15 chat with Frank once when he was still in the House so I had followed him a little more closely than others might.

When you say there is something more to the story of Frank's boyfriend are you talking about Frank making a call from his House office to appeal parking tickets? That's all I have heard of.

As to Fannie and Freddie, Frank tried to get more regulations passed to exclude people from getting mortgages who could not afford them. Bush II and the Republicans would not hear of it.

Funny that one of the most vocal critics of Frank's homosexuality was Larry Craig. "Super Straight" Republican Larry was arrested in the Minneapolis airport for soliciting sex with a man from his toilet stall.

    1. that's Dodd-Frank. the Fannie May-Freddy Mac is another story. and then there's a hanging question: did Barney know (and approve of) what his friend was doing?

    2. How many women die or are injured when undergoing an abortion? quite a few I am told. Maybe, in the interests of balance, you should look up that statistic. And while you are at it, you should take into consideration the pro-abortion crowd's fanatical resistance to any sensible regulation of abortion clinics.

Who told you that? According to this source, abortion is 14 times safer than giving childbirth.
This number was from 2012, you can look up more recent numbers if you want.

I don't know and could care less. I just think it is REALLY funny a closeted Republican homosexual led the change against Frank. The Republican Larry Craig's famous quote was "I have a wide stance." That's why he his foot just happened to tap the foot of the undercover agent in the next bathroom stall.

    2. 14 times "safer" than childbirth. what in hell does that mean? sounds like pro-abortion propaganda to me. just about every day, I read authenticated stories of women injured by abortionists, something that one would expect from an unregulated industry (and an unregulated industry it is). and "safer for whom? in fine do we define ethical behavior based on questionable stats? of course, for you, there is no ethical question involved: unborn human life is an ethical nullity.

For someone who claims to read a lot and know a lot it is disappointing to hear you claim the impression you get from reading the news is a more reliable statistical measure than data gathered by official agencies. Data showing abortions are safer than births has been available since Roe. People like you and Matt who live under rocks have not seen it apparently.

I will not be posting any more of "these you have heard" or "impressions I have" until you find statistics from reliable sources to back up you false claim.

  5. Unknown--I deleted you post because, although you claimed a source dismissed the 14 times number I gave, you did not give the source's estimate as to how much more dangerous a birth is than an abortion. Is it ten times more dangerous, five times more dangerous or what? I have never seen a study ever that says it is safer to give birth than to have an abortion. Therefore, I assume abortion is safer than giving birth. If you have information contrary to what I have seen the last 30 years I'd like to see it.
