Christian Author About Daughter, "I'm so glad you're gay."

A prominent Christian author, Jen Hatmaker, was quoted on Christian Post as delighted her daughter is lesbian. It is the first time I have seen such a story on that site. The story is tagged as "most popular" in the current issue. In comments the usual expressions of outrage by Christians who think they know better than Hatmaker who constitutes genuine Christianity and she does not qualify.

I've been around many parents of gay children. I've heard countless stories from such children. One of the most powerful conclusions from all of these is that parents who accept the homosexuality of their children and are open minded about the issue in general end up with the most healthy adult children and the best long term relationship with them.

By now, the majority of people in the secular world have come to terms with homosexuality. The place where it remains a taboo is in religion. So, how are parents who are religious supposed to deal with life when their own child practices a sin that is believed by many Christians of be an "abomination?"

The answer is to become better informed, not only about homosexuality but about what the Bible has to say about it. The are many views about what is written in the Bible and used against homosexuality. Plenty of Biblical scholars have concluded the Bible does not condemn it. This being the case, it is reasonable to ask why there are those who think it is condemned and those who do not.

The answer lies in our culture and the myths that remain in it. We are born into a culture that believes certain things to be true even if they are not. One is that homosexuality is both immoral and sin. It is this view that drives wedges between parents and their gay children. It even drive wedges between child who are not themselves gay and their parents because young adults today have largely left behind the myth homosexuality is moral issue.

That the culture condemns homosexuality is the reason some in religion condemn it. It is safe to say that if the culture had never condemned it neither would have religion.

  1. When one rejoices and applauds sin, one commits sin and encourages others by their evil. Homosexuality is a grave sin. Having homosexual tendencies is not the sin. Homosexual acts is the grave sin. The modern world does not want to "judge" but the modern world judges harshly all the time. People, like me, who don't condone and support homosexuality are judged very harshly. Job loss, expulsion from universities and more await those who follow Christ and proclaim what He taught. When one claims All Lives Matter, they are scorned as bigots. Scholarships are taken away, admittance to universities is taken away. Dissenting thought is punished before it is uttered. Catholic? You must be anti-gay and anti-Black. Huh? So much for liberalism. Let's just call it what it is.

When it gets to the point that we need a [Christian] Preference Act and Christian quotas in employment and education then you can whine. Until then with the judicial system stacked with conservatives, a breach in the wall between church and state big enough to drive a church fun bus through, and the seats of power at the local, state and federal level marinated in the Holy Ghost, you should enjoy your advantage. Just grin and bear it. Even as Christianity in America fades slowly to a minority it will still be wagging the dog for decades. You’ll be in your heaven and I’ll be dead.

    2. I almost feel sorrow for you. You seem to feel genuinely oppressed.

If her parents had said, We're so happy you're straight, the cacophony from the libs would have been unbearable.

Sin has no real surprises, just sad, dreary endings. Homosexualality is not a cause for celebration.

That, of course, is a matter of opinion. When I first was accepted to gatherings of gay people a young man was relating enthusiastically a man he had met recently. He said, "Being gay is a gift from God."

I, myself, doubt either gay or straight is a gift from God because so far as I know no god exists. Gay or straight, so far as anyone has been able to determine, becomes known to a child early in life and no one knows why. If that young man wants to believe it is a gift from God there is no harm in that. If you want to believe it is some grave sin go right ahead. Depriving gay people of opportunities available to everyone else, however, is wrong.

    4. I just read that Kayne West says God told him to run for President in 2020 and he wants Trump and Pence to step aside. Its up to Trump supporters to prove God did not tell West this. (I'm always being told to prove God does not exist.) If God told West this but Trump has not heard a thing from God it must mean Trump is actually supposed to step aside. Maybe Matt can explain this, having deep knowledge of the scriptures as he says he has.

    5. Just because someone says God personally told him X doesn't mean X is so. The burden is on Kanye and God to make X true. Since God is silent on the matter of Kanye's presidency you can rest assured God is ... (drum roll) silent on the matter.

I looked but could not find a reference in the Bible for that statement.

    1. That's because you are a fundamentalist without any knowledge of scripture.
