Evangelicals Prefected the "Cancel Culture", the Boycott. It's Turning on Them

How many "boycotts" have evangelical and Catholics called for? I can think of half a dozen. There were boycotts and Disney, Proctor and Gamble, Ford and refusal of communion for Biden. I can't remember any that changed anything, but believers thought they had the power to do so.

Now comes sweet justice. A cocky preacher in Birmingham, AL., thought it would be cute to approve of a Trump backer who claimed white people are persecuted more than black people. It exploded into the public's awareness.

Reverend Cocky had not taken into account his several leases for preaching space in public schools. His leases were quickly cancelled. He was the "victim" of the boycott technique Christians love. Except theirs don't work. This one did. Suddenly the preacher was in tears apologizing.

One thing zealous Christians are not good at is the long game. When they decide to ban gays, boycott businesses or go after politicians they don't think about opponents doing the same thing to them. It just doesn't enter their minds.

Years ago a guy who owned some hamburger places in Fargo/Moorhead was at the forefront of trying to close the women's clinic that performs abortions. He was out in front everyday screaming and carrying on. He also called me a few times. I mentioned to him his efforts at citizen harassment to close a private lawful business might some day be meant by people blocking traffic and trying to close his businesses. He got quite angry that such a thing could happen. "That wouldn't be fair. I am an asset to the community. Surely they wouldn't do that." He disappeared from the protests later.

I haven't seen evangelical leaders play the boycott of businesses card for a few years. After several spectacular failures they may have learned how weak their efforts have been.

I'm interested in watching the refusal of some Catholic priests to serve Joe Biden communion. I assume some priest somewhere serves it to him. Or, if no one does, is he happy with his status of not doing the ritual anymore. It's looking more and more like he will be elected President. If that happens his church going and communion will be reported to the public. Will some of these cocky priests eat crow and serve him? Or will others become celebrities because they like being Joe Biden's priest.

This latter would be a sweet reminder of how the long game is often the smart game.
