Why is There Just One Unforgivable Sin

The concept of sin is the Achilles Heel of Christianity. Think of what is in our recent news. According to the news a police officer murdered a black man. If this death was completely unprovoked (maybe we'll learn more ultimately), the police officer committed a heinous crime. Surely in Christianity it would be considered a sin.

What can the officer do to erase this sin? Merely ask for forgiveness. He has not committed the most serious and unforgivable sin of all. A Christian parody site has a thread that has been going for years entitled, "You can kill almost anyone and still get to heaven." Even though the purpose of the thread is to ridicule Christianity, it seems to have much truth to it. A far more serious sin according to the Bible is not believing in the Holy Spirit. That is blasphemy.

Why is it believers allow themselves to be painted into a corner like this? Why cannot they see whoever wrote the Bible had bad intentions? Haven't they ever heard, and can't they recognize the language of politics, "You are either for me or against me?" It's the old line "in the sand" metaphor. It's purpose is control.

During my four decades of advocating for homosexual rights I've heard and read countless times the most serious sin of all is homosexuality, or gay marriage. This current sin fad will pass in time and believers will be back with the literal wall of sin, blasphemy. For whatever reasons, they allow themselves to be manipulated, first, by wealthy goat herders of some thousands of years ago and, second, by public Christian personalities wanting their money.

Decades ago a famous columnist, Jack Anderson, wrote, "Always be skeptical of those who run for high office." That would be good advice also when reading the Bible. Reworded it would say, "Always be skeptical of religious leaders and literature trying to tell you what to think."

  1. Jon; re. "A far more serious sin according to the Bible is not believing in Jesus. That is blasphemy".
    Not so fast. You shall see, blasphemy against Jesus is forgivable. for example ;swearing in His name.
    Mat 12;31;
    Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven". That is to say; "...against the Holy spirit, only through whom faith can be comprehended, and forgiveness received.
    In other words, only the Holy Spirit, "that still small voice", enables belief in Jesus.

    Mat 12 32;
    "And whoever shall speak a word against the son of Man (Jesus),it shall be forgiven him, but whoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or the age to come.
    In other words, deny / reject the Holy Spirit, No faith possible , no forgiveness.

  2. Helper "blasphemy against Jesus is forgivable."

    Thanks. I forgot it is against the Holy Spirit that is unforgivable. I corrected the blog.

    Just wondering, your reference to "that still small voice", where does that appear in the Bible.

    2. Jon; As you can see there are differences in the translations, but the content is the same. I was trained in the KJV, and I enjoy the poetic and Hebraic nature of that translation, especially the OT, even though some of it is foreign to the moderns. This is why it is beneficial to have several reliable translations to compare. Although I must repeat, the content is the same.

    3. Then there is; "The Hound of Heaven". Not in the Bible, but from a poem of an Englishman; Francis Thompson; 1859-1907 . As a hound will pursues. Interesting symbolism.

    4. The Hound of Heaven is none other God seeking out and pursuing with zeal the lost sinners of the world. It is a poem, about 182 lines long.
