Slippery Right Wing Cardinal Dolan Loves Trump


I say here often the 2020 election will be about abortion. Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York City is a good example of why that is the case.

I've discussed Dolan's history before. He is in the Catholic faction of former Pope Benedict. Pope Benedict has had little interest in the lives of ordinary people. Instead, he was and remains engrossed in details of Catholic politics and theology. For example, he used his Christmas message once to warn the faithful about the evils of homosexuality. It appears he made several mistakes approving pedophile priests to be moved around instead of turned over to law enforcement.

Dolan gained favor of Pope Benedict when he created a phony trust fund for cemeteries in order to hide assets of the Milwaukee Diocese. He intention was to put Diocese funds out of reach from law suits over sex abuse by Diocese priests. The courts stopped him but Pope Benedict promoted Dolan to the New York Diocese. Now he is again doing Benedict's bidding by playing footsie with President Trump.

While Dolan does not appear with Trump in the photo ops where the President is surrounded by evangelical male preachers plus Paula White, I can imagine the photos are watched by Pope Benedict with pleasure. Maybe he gives them some kind of Catholic blessing. This is because the preachers surrounding the President are all on Benedict's anti gay marriage and anti abortion team. They all seek the marriage of religion and state to give anti gay marriage and abortion the force of the federal government. Dolan is there in spirit.

The link is about push back Dolan is receiving from other branches of the Catholic denomination. A letter was signed by many clergy denouncing Trump's policies that are contrary to Catholic teaching. This will not detour an ambitious Dolan who thinks he can outlast the current Pope and put in place the kind of Pope, maybe himself, who loves to chum it up with politicians.

The Religious Capitol Invaders May Yet Win

So much about U.S. society and religion can be learned from the Civil War and what happened afterwards. After its defeat, the South started a myth about the unethical soldiers from the North. The South fought for principles of God and states rights. The North did not. It was the South, this propaganda told the country, that had the high moral ground.  The Capitol invaders, encouraged by Trump, swallowed the myth that Biden's election was stolen. Thus, they think they held and still hold the high moral ground. This was reinforced by the cross and prayers during the invasion. Father Frank Pavone, the Ultimate Crook

Recently, the Vatican defrocked Frank Pavone. His diehard fans are outraged. This is because he cleverly manipulated his fans and the press all the while living well from donations and, apparently, abusing some women. By making abortion the "sin" of the century, and himself the main opposition to this one sin, he himself could get away with any sin he pleased.  As the link points out, Pavone was the perfect priest for the Trump era.
