Anti Abortion Politics is a Litany of Lies

For various reasons, anti abortion political operatives have gotten away with bald faced lies for several decades. They have been caught with their pants down with the death bed statement of Norma McCorvey, the Jane Roe of Roe v Wade. She said she began talking up "pro life" because she was paid to do so. As I wrote yesterday, even though she was paid by the anti abortion establishment she also earned some money working at an anti abortion clinic. She left the clinic when she was offered paid opportunities to be a public figure against abortion. It left me with the impression anti abortion offered her more than she was earning at the clinic.

I've reviewed here my personal experience anti abortion demonstrators at the women's clinic in Fargo. One of the lies they told was my wife owned the clinic and this is why I endorsed police efforts to keep the public right of way around the clinic open as the law requires. During that period they started fake abortion clinics advertising the word "abortions." They did not provide abortions, of course, but tried to entice women into their facility to persuade against abortions. A judge eventually put a stop to that.

It's refreshing to see publications that review all these years of lies. Anti abortion could carry on their crusade by simply stating this fact: We have a religious view that one fertilized egg is a human being. Thus, killing the fetus before birth is killing a human being. We ourselves will not have abortions. People will other religious views may do otherwise.

But, the temptation to wheel and deal in politics is a temptation too enticing to pass up. The groups have for decades worked in the field of propaganda spreading claims that are false. When they spread a false claim and money rolls in it must provide a high like nothing else.

Paul Weyrich, a Republican Party loyalist, explained how the Party endorsed anti abortion. He said at a conference he searched for issues that would draw evangelical money and voters to the Party. Abortion was not on the table at first because white Christians for decades had endorsed abortion rights. He tried prayer in schools and opposition to the equal rights amendment but nothing worked. Then he stumbled into anti abortion. Along with Jerry Falwell this took off and became the mother load for the Party.

The issue was milked with shameless lies. One is that "science" proves one fertilized egg is a human being. Scott Walker of Wisconsin said mothers were bringing babies home from the hospital and killing them. There was the story of Planned Parenthood making money off of body parts. We've heard of the "heart beat" when there is no heart. There is a false claim the Bible condemns abortion. The lies keep coming.

Surely the lies will come back to haunt anti abortion politicos.

  1. Unknown--I'd be happy to post comments of yours or anyone else's who takes the time to address the issues discussed in the blog. In this blog the issues were dishonesty in the anti abortion political wing. I often don't publish angry rants these days because they take up space better used for debate points.

    1. fine. I don't really care. I do, however, sincerely believe that you have gone beyond the pale, giving yourself over to what you call "angry rants, " denying well known facts and accusing others of what you, yourself, stand guilty of. I only wish that you would get off the corner soapbox, go across the street (so to speak) and, in looking back at the soap box from some distance, could take a more objective, deliberative view of the issues that you are so eager to promote.
