Why Can't Some People Believe in God

It was pointed out to me early in my blogging days there is something wrong with those of us who do not believe in the invisible and mythical God. We have what the Bible and people today say is a "hardened heart." We who do not believe need to be reminded there is something wrong with us, there is nothing wrong with those who hear voices like the voice of God or sense the presence of some being which no one has ever seen.

We are visiting relatives in the San Diego area and today we visited a festival where various tables  advertised several causes in the region. I saw a table advertising Islam and a pamphlet, Atheism; an Islamic perspective. Learn the Basics. On the front is says, "We (God) will show Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. Quran 41:53"

Inside the pamphlet made known that, like Christianity, Islam sees something wrong with those who do not believe. "God has placed in every person, an natural inclination to believe, but this innate predisposition can either be nurtured or suppressed."

It goes on to explain that, "...without this genuine openness and willingness, no amount of information can make someone believe.  In fact, God warns us that those who approach His signs from a position of pride and arrogance will only find justification for their disbelief."

The pamphlet goes on to explain some of the tenants of Islam including that the truth was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. The truth went from Prophet Muhammad into the Koran and, unlike the Bible which has been changed countless time, it has remained exactly as written originally.

Even though the pamphlet was titled a message for atheists it is clear it is also intended as a message for Christians. The means Christians who remain skeptical of Islam have, like atheists, something wrong with them. Christian are unable or unwilling to have an open mind about that the holy man Prophet Muhammad and his message revealed from God himself.

It is necessary for both we atheists and Christians to diagnose what is wrong with us and fix it. If you are a Christian you might now realize how ridiculous it sounds to tell atheists it is their fault they do not believe.

  1. “According to Islamic doctrine, both the Children of Israel and the Christians broke their respective covenants and corrupted their scriptures. By way of contrast, God's covenant with the prophet Muhammad and his followers is true and complete ... .” ( https://classroom.synonym.com/in-islam-what-is-a-covenant-with-allah-12086036.html ) Them’s fightin’ words I reckon. I guess God had a blanket covenant with all humanity and side contracts with each of the big three Abrahamic religions. That has not been helpful. In my case an innate predisposition, the seed of theism, fell on fallow ground. That does not mean I am anti-theistic. Whatever floats your boat. However when theists start pitching their flotsam and jetsam into my sea of tranquility I will call it out and vigorously challenge the intrusion. To me proselytizing is polluting. That is what is “right” with me and I’m not going to fix it.

That's a good insight into what we seem to have. Apparently, there are lots of other side deals, maybe billions. For example, that "covenant" Jesus was supposed to have offered, "The Old Testament laws can be ignored. Just believe in me and I will forgive your sins. Accept my deal and I will provide you a ticket to paradise after you die."

But then there is "The Art of the Deal" Donald Trump. He says he has never asked for forgiveness for anything. He would not say this unless he had negotiated his own side deal. That deal, from what we can observe, is that he does not have to believe nor ask for forgiveness because he can do whatever he wants and get into paradise.

Matt knows a lot about this stuff and shared a little insight. Jesus does not like socialism nor communism. This is not in the Bible but insiders like Matt know this about Jesus. Jesus, on the other hand, needs Trump to fight off these forms of government. So he gave Trump a free ride on sin. A good side deal for both.

    2. My understanding of a covenant is; God's covenant with us, not our covenant with God.
God initiates, we respond, ---or not.
cp ; "I give you a new covenant".

    3. Jon February 23, 2020 at 9:55 AM: Thousands of years of the re-transmission, transcription, and translation of the Christian tradition, with “faith” doing all of the exception handling, the bible, this book of books, some dare say ghost written by a “holy” spirit, becomes a bewildering tale of covenants, of divine deals. It is the foundation of belief for millions but ripe for misinterpretation and misuse by the faithful, by grifters, charlatans, clergy, and some very shady political gobshites, to shape, influence, and control the behavior of others for power and profit. As to Trump, you can’t clean a floor with such an extraordinarily dirty mop. (https://www.dictionary.com/browse/gobshite)
