The 2020 Election is About Cultural/Religious Wars

The biggest cultural/religion issue right now is abortion and the second gay marriage. In my view, it is hard to overstate the role of abortion and gay rights in the 2020 election.

Trump's conservative Attorney General stated clearly the right is losing the cultural war. In the past 50 years, he said recently, religion has been under increasing attack. There has been a "growing ascendancy of secularism and the doctrine of moral relativism....we cannot depend on the pendulum swinging back....This is not decay, it's organized destruction."

That growing secularism has been caused by an "organized destruction" from the left certainly is contrary to polls. Polls show a big reason young people lose respect for Christianity is the attacks on gay people and abortion rights by its political arms. Christian has not lost ground because of organized resistance but has shot itself in the foot.

Since the right wing branch cannot see its own failings it has come to believe the right leader can win its fight against the left. That leader, or course, is President Trump. By choosing a politician as the leader of its moral war they have defined victory by whether or not this President is reelected.

There was a safer route. The right could have said, "Look, our views on abortion and gays are the moral high ground. We are not in favor of mixing government with religion. Instead, we invite all Americans to our moral high ground." They could then continue to claim they hold a majority of the public even if elections moved laws in a liberal direction.

Religious conservatives seem to believe that once they have chosen a slow horse they can win a horse race by whipping it harder than the other jockeys. They must continue to support Trump because they have painted themselves into a corner.

Here I'm almost predicting the outcome of the 2020 election I know better than to do that. The 2016 election found Clinton receiving more votes than Trump and losing.

By misreading reality, like Attorney General Barr is doing, they are taking a bigger risk than they needed to take.

  1. The 2016 presidential election was won by Trump using the same rules which elected Obama, Clinton, Carter, Johnson and Kennedy.

As for the 2020 presidential election, I sincerely doubt abortion and marriage will be the defining routes to victory or defeat. It appears that impeachment, the economy, immigration and foreign policy will be the major issues. The Democrats are clinically obsessed with impeachment, immigration and climate change. Those are winning issues in red states and purple states.

Pelosi is particularly obsessed with Trump and is trying to hold together a fractured Democrat party which she is incapable of reuniting. Half of the party wants her head on a plate.10-20% of the party wishes to hold on to their jobs.

Ousting President Trump through impeachment and trial has been a losing proposition from the start. Tarnishing his name is backfiring as most impeachments do.

Meanwhile, fundraising is up for Republicans and Trump. The Senate is confirming federal judges left and right. And impeachment is doing wonders for his approval ratings, as it should.
