The New Evangelism: Celebrity Branded Religion

A trend is emerging which may foretell what will happen to religion in the U.S. when enough young people have left traditional churches.

The Kardashians and the Jenners are famous pop celebrities who wear the Christianity on their sleeves. I understand there are others as well. They are dropping their religion creds wherever it helps them. Protestantism, meanwhile is trending toward a style of worship that fits a celebrity-style religion. It is a concert style where there is Christian rock with a light dose of preaching. We can expect a package of branding that includes music, clothes, fragrances and concert style worship.

Some say if you ask a white teenager today who is a famous church leader he/she will not say Franklin Graham or Joel Osteen but one of these branded performing celebrities.

I think I'm correct in saying the old version of celebrity-type worship was the revival event or something like Billy Graham. It was to compliment churches not compete or take their place. From what I read, the new version is a replacement. I have a young relative who, as I understand it, is deeply involved is such a church performing music and preaching.

I would explain the change in this way. When churches were neighborhood gathering places people looked forward to seeing friends and relatives there. It was something fun. As time went on and neighborhood churches have closed. The larger churches need something more to make themselves fun because the old neighborhood links are not there. That something for younger people is good music and lots of it.

Music is so big in Christianity. Buddhists have their melodic chants, Muslims their prayers. But, as Steve Martin noted in his bluegrass number, "Atheists Ain't Got No Songs."

That's where we cannot compete.

  2. There is such a shortage of experts telling us what the Bible really means. Kanye West and Kim came along just in time. Kanye teaches us that good fashion, clothes that fit properly and look good, is the pathway to God. Praise Yeezus.

    1. Jon; Under the zenith of self-promotion lies the nadir of the Christian faith. And I thought it would take some doing to top Paula White’s “Where I walk, so walks Jesus.”
What a trail blazer for the Son of Man. Then along comes Yeezus and his “I am God”. The end draws nigh. It rots from the inside out as it’s brand of morality would predict.

    2. Maybe Kayne and Kim can update God and Jesus. The current versions are getting a little long in the tooth. They were last updated to condemn abortion and homosexuality. The Bible does not condemn these but there was money to be made so what the heck. God and Jesus could now be reinvented as pleased with rockin' gospel music and $400 sneakers. Condemning abortion and gays were so "New Covenant." Covenant III is loud music concerts lined with vendors.

    3. Kayne West's "sermon" tomorrow at Joel Osteen's church are sold out. Scalpers are getting big prices. Hopefully it will be recorded by someone and we can learn about the new prophesied Jesus. (Prophesied here.)

    4. Jon; So Yeezus has a gig on the Olsteen show. Sometimes he seems to suffer from flights of ideas that manifest in pressured speech. My guess is there will be a moment when it will seem he is speaking in tongues. Hopefully he can rein-in his penchant for course language. He has been quoted saying; “My greatest pain in life is that I will never be able to see myself perform live.” Oh how we love carnival.

  4. Even though I'm highly skeptical of West's "performance", I must remember Mark 9;38-39 and Luke 9;49-50. "They're healing and casting out demons, and they're not one of us. Jesus said' Leave them alone. If they're not against us, they're for us".
