Sin and Presidential Politics

I really find fascinating the candidate Mayor Pete Buttigieg. He seems both intellectually smart but street smart as well.

He started out his campaign by picking a fight with the Vice President over the latter's moral and religious views. What he was doing, I believe, was going on the offense rather than waiting to be attacked for being gay. To me, picking a spat with a far right Christian was a clever way to bring up the topic.

Then he correctly quoted the Bible about abortion, that the Bible says the human being begins with its first breath, not at conception. It puts on the defensive Bible thumpers who claim the Bible condemns abortion when it, in fact, does not.

We all know what the big issue is that surrounds Buttigieg. It is sin, his homosexuality. One might think sin would be the issue with the current President. Why is it not to many who claim to be Christian?

It is not an issue to them because there are sins they understand and sins they don't understand. Everyone knows there is the temptation for sex and that some fall. Everyone knows there is a temptation to take money when one is not entitled to is. The President has failed to pay people to whom he owed money and he has profited from the Presidency. Because these voters understand these sins they are ok.

But, if Christians have never had homosexual friends or family members and are unfamiliar with same sex attraction then they not only label it a sin but rank it as the greatest of sins. If Buttigieg were the candidate, or even the Vice Presidential candidate, Christian voters would have to choose which of the two kinds of sin are best suited for the Presidency. One would have to guess many would say the worst sin is the one they know the least about and would vote for Trump.

The Bible does not rank Buttigieg's "sin" greater than Trump's. But, the sin they know least about is the worst one.

  1. I’d vote for Pete. Hope he keeps trying if he can’t get there this cycle. “One would have to guess many would say the worst sin is the one they know the least about and would vote for Trump.” Trump is the embodiment of the seven deadly sins (Vainglory/Pride, Wrath, Sloth, Lust, Envy, Greed, Gluttony/Lack of Self Control). Most of us have touched on one or more of them if we’re honest. But the man hits all seven out of the park. Then there’s the likes of George Rekers, Ted Haggard, Bishop Eddie Long, Paul Crouch, Father John Geoghan and others. All notable for their stand against “the sin” of homosexuality while engaging in it themselves. Many folks that would not vote for Pete received misinformation on his lifestyle from the hypocrites listed above. Trump may have the edge with some voters because they give him a pass on his misogyny, exploitation of women, infidelity, outright lies, and chronic dishonesty. “A man must stand erect, not be kept erect by others.”, Marcus Aurelius.
