Biden Supports Women's Rights, Denied Catholic Communion

If ever there was simple explanation as to why Christian numbers are falling, denying communion because of politics has to be one of the big ones. Presidential Candidate Joe Biden reportedly was denied communion in South Carolina because he supports abortion rights.

Biden's position on abortion is that he personally is against it but does not believe he should legislate away women's rights when they disagree with him. This, of course, is a view that enrages anti abortion zealots who want to impose their religious views on everyone.

When clergy decline to make rituals available to politicians they are holding their noses high and passing judgement on others. Polling show this is exactly what many who leave the church complain about. Whether it is gay marriage or abortion, the self righteous are the least attractive Christians and encourage those who are leaving.

I've often wondered, when a clergy is accused by a creditable source of child abuse, is he denied communion by other clergy? I doubt it. That is because Catholic clergy have narrow views of themselves and of Christianity in general.

When Catholic clergy are not allowed to marry it means they are also not allowed to experience certain complexities of life most everyone else knows about. The simple teachings of the church can be treated as more relevant than they are.

A writer discussing why so many leave the faith found the overly simple versions of the gospel are "incomplete" for dealing with today's more complex world. Many who would otherwise stay with their church life abandon it because its simple rules do not match up with the reality members experience. The conservative faith is of no help to women who know they will be unable to support a child or men and women who know they are attracted to the same sex.

Using one's power as a priest to deny communion is opening the door for another set of people to leave the faith.

  1. I guess the unconditional love of Jesus Christ is controlled and metered by the Catholic Church, it’s popes, prelates, and priests. There you see is the source of it’s illegitimate power over the faithful. Brilliant! My understanding is when a priest consecrates the communion host transubstantiation occurs. The wafer and the wine become the actual body and blood of Jesus. The priest is the creator of the Creator. Now that’s some power. I believe communion is “closed” in the RCC. Only those in compliance with the teachings of the church can take Holy Communion. That I assume is why Vice President Biden, a life long Catholic, was turned away. In my experience divorced Catholics are also prohibited from taking communion. However for a fee they may be granted a dispensation and rejoin the in-crowd. Biden may not have slipped the priest and diocese some wink-wink-nudge-nudge-cash. Being a baptized Christian he could have walked down the street to the church of a Protestant denomination that serves “open” communion free of charge. Of course the host may only be symbolic and not the actual blood and flesh hors d'oeuvres served at the RCC. Someone wrote, “Christians are the only ones who shoot their wounded.” The wounded are in the pews.

    1. Ardy B --- Biden can buy the wafers on line. One do confession on line. Maybe it is or soon will be possible to get an on line substantiation. If a priest has the power to do this in church, why not on line. With Biden, there will be priests all over who will do a wafer with him.
