Underground Abortion Pills are Gaining Ground

The anti women Christian sites have been crowing this week that the national number of abortions has fallen. There are accurate statistics as to the number of abortions done in clinics. Not so for those done outside of clinics.

It is possible to buy the pills for abortions from various sources. In Mexico they are available without a prescription. It is not surprising that in Texas, which has many restrictions, the counties close to the Mexican border have shown the largest drop in clinical abortions.

Websites giving information on how to buy the medicine and use it are seeing increasing amounts of traffic. Several people who follow abortion statistics speculate the actual number of abortions has not fallen.

Of course, there are anti abortion groups trying to pass new laws against this medicine. It is almost humorous they think they will be able to even reduce the number of abortions, let alone outlaw them entirely. They do have the opportunity to try to shame women. But their ability to cut off access to abortion medicines approaches zero.

What is going on in the U.S. mirrors what has happened in countries which outlaw entirely abortions. The book, Her Body; Our Laws. On the Front Lines of the Abortion War from El Salvador to Oklahoma, discusses the impossibility of outlawing abortions. The author, Michelle Oberman, says some countries are successful at reducing slightly the number of abortions in very poor rural areas. In prosperous urban areas the laws are ignored.

The politics of anti abortion have never changed regardless of the country. Politicians cater to religious groups by pretending to stop abortion. Gullible religious voters want to believe those politicians are successful so they support these politicians even though nothing has changed.

Those who track over the counter abortion pill sales and compare them to state restrictions on clinical abortions say there is a distinct relationship. When restriction are implemented sales of abortion pills goes up.

We need only to look at the economics of an unplanned pregnancy. Going to a clinic involves two big expenses, missing work and paying for the services. Taking the pill at home costs a tiny fraction of these two expenses.

Moralists screamed when the birth control pill was introduced. Now it is so common 99% of Catholics use it. The abortion pill is following the same trajectory.

  1. The abortion rate is half what it was at its peak since Roe v. Wade. I credit two things. One, men and women have used science to understand the humanity of the child in the womb. 3-D and color ultrasounds are amazing scientific tools. So, too, are the countless stories of illegal sales of baby parts and the gruesome details of abortionists like Gosnell and Hern. Two, the Holy Spirit. To ignore the spiritual warfare taking place is part and parcel of atheists but not so for those who believe in God.

  2. Matt--"I credit two things." These are the things you have been told to credit. They did not include more birth control or at home abortions. You are keeping you thinking inside the box provided by anti abortion politics.
