What is the Most Grievous of Sins

I've found it entertaining to keep track of the most terrible sins. When I was a farm boy it was working in the fields with a tractor. That one is long forgotten.

Bart Ehrman followed the sins deserving the harshest after-life punishment in ancient times. Like today, the importance of various sins reflected in the punishment after societies changed in the first centuries. That has never stopped.

Ehrman found there were various punishments in hell for various sins. There was adultery and theft. Add to that not paying homage to the invisible Holy Ghost.

Lying was, of course, a big sin in the ancient world. Since we know various parts of the Bible were written by impostors we can be sure there was plenty of lying in the neighborhood. Today it is said our President lies several times a day. No one mentions penalties for lying any more. Best not to get too specific when we're talking of family.

If political rhetoric from pulpits is any judge, the greatest sin today is abortion. This, followed by gay sex.

Abortion is not mentioned in the Bible so it cannot be considered a grave sin. We do often hear, "what this passage means" followed by the claim it refers to abortion. Abortion as sin is an innovation.

The phrase "what this means" is also the trick used to claim the Bible condemns gay sex. This is another innovation in the sin industry. That is not the industry practicing sin, it is the one creating sins.

Those who enjoy pointing to the sins of others, such as anti abortion and anti gay groups, would do well to study the Bible.

  2. Mortal sin is more serious than venial sin. One must confess a mortal sin prior to death or risk hell.
Apostasy against the Holy Spirit is, I believe, the most serious of mortal sins. It is a Christian who denounces his faith. Murder, especially murder of a priest, is a particularly heinous mortal sin. What are mortal sins? Look here --> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortal_sin

  3. What is the most grevious sin? I’ll cast a vote for proselytution. A proselytute is someone who will say or do anything to spread their
religion or worse yet, a person who uses the religious beliefs of others for non-religious personal gain, ie., a politician.

  4. As I understand it the Greek word for 'sin', meant to 'miss the mark/target'. That would appear to mean, 'just keep working at it'. Not that big of deal.
