Would God Allow Us All to be Killed by a Meteor Collision

To the non religious an all powerful god is almost amusing. Whether it is the Judaeo/Christian God or one of the many others it seems like odd thinking.

I was reminded of how implausible an all powerful god is while reading an article in The New Yorker. It is about two different periods in earth's history, the Cretaceous and Paleogene periods. I must mention not all scientists in this field agree about the following.

The earliest, Cretaceous, was when dinosaurs and many other plants and animals lived. Then, 66 million years ago, a large asteroid struck near the Yucatan peninsula. The asteroid was six miles across and made a crater eighteen miles deep.

The explosion was so large material hotter than the sun spread across the Northern hemisphere. The entire continent of India was set on fire. The sun was blocked for a long time. Nearly every living thing on the planet earth died quite quickly. Evidence of the explosion has been located in soils around the world. The most revealing evidence of what happened that day is right down the road in the now famous Hell's Creek, North Dakota, dig.

The period since that explosion 66 million years ago is called the Paleogene period. It is the period, of course, when evolution brought creatures that eventually resulted in humans. We came along recently, 200,000 to 300,000 years ago. Then, there is this. Would evolution have brought humans if the animals like dinosaurs had not been killed?

So, if there is an all powerful God why did he kill almost everything 66 billion years ago? Was it because the dinosaurs were sinning so he gave them the Noah flood punishment?

I don't see anything but a random event in the asteroid strike. Another random event could wipe us out in the same way.

So far as we know, there is no all powerful god to protect us.
