Now, Blasphemy in Comic Books

An interesting thing to observe to plot the current culture are comic books. Many might scoff at comic books as a source of anything meaningful. That would be a mistake. Artists, writers and business people who produce them are tuned into the most subtle of the culture's direction.

A comic book writer who is Christian has a view of Jesus different from that of orthodox Christians. His view is Jesus was a person of influence who was to use that power for the good of human kind, not just for forgiving sins and getting individuals to a heaven. The author has written other books where he criticizes orthodox Christianity. He says Christians often wrongly interpret Jesus and his followers as the winning team which was not the point of Jesus.

In the comic book series, "Second Coming", the author presents what he believes is a plausible Jesus story. God was disappointed with Jesus so had him killed and locked him away in the beyond. Eventually, God saw a super hero, something like a Superman, and told Jesus he wanted him to learn from the super hero how to be a proper Jesus. The comic book story is about Jesus returning to earth and exchanging ideas with the super hero.

The giant DC Comics bought the series from the author. But thousands of Christians protested the story as blasphemous. DC was scared off and backed out. The author says he has another publisher.

Here's the question: Is this version of Jesus one the author is trying to promote or is it a version in the culture and the author merely reflects what is already here? We can all enjoy this ongoing cultural theater.
