Wicca and Paganism Are Growing Rapidly

According to a survey reported in Christianity Today, the faiths called Wicca and Paganism are growing rapidly. Some think there are more of these two faiths than there are of Presbyterians.

While the growth appeared to start quite a while back, some blame current growth on the popular books and films called Harry Potter.

What are cultural reasons this growth appears to be happening. If the two were presented as "anti Christianity" they might be seen as enemies. They are often referred to, however, as "pre Christianity." This latter description has a less threatening sound.

One thing I'm certain is true of Wicca and Paganism is they lack a central organization which hammers out what the approved theology is going to be. This leaves individuals and small groups to adopt whatever is meaningful to them. As I have written here for years, religion is something unique to each individual. It is free form.

Trying to make this seemingly natural inclination to free form thinking, each person with either an individual god or a claim to share a god with millions of others but have a unique understanding of what that god is, makes it impossible to have a religion where everyone agrees with its tenets. It is like trying to mix oil and water.

Wicca and Paganism are much more aligned with humans than is, say, Christianity. Both of these faiths allow local areas and individual people to develop his/her own version of religion.

That they are "pre-Christian" can give them a degree of authenticity in Christian society.

  1. makes them sound like some contemporary Congregationalists. That notwithstanding, is the growth of Wicca, paganism and, let's throw in Satanism, a good/positive thing? What's your opinion on that point.

  2. If today I convinced 3 people to form a group to worship earthworms, it would be the fastest growing earthworm worship fraternity in the world. I mean, exponential growth. From 0 to 4 in the bat of an eye.

Your theories are quaint. I'm waiting for the first politician to cater to the wiccan/pagan voting bloc with some sort of acknowledgement. A goat head costume? A staff with a slithering snake?
