Life-Saving Abortion May Become Bigger than Ever

Once in a while it's fun to think way outside the box.

Let's start with today's values and circumstances. Abortions are performed by drug companies and clinics. Many of the clinics are nonprofit national organizations. All manner of hand wringing goes on because abortion has been arbitrarily labeled a "moral" issue. It is a medical issue, a service provided by skilled people. Only religious beliefs have manufactured the notion it is a moral issue.

The life of the fetus now competes with what the woman wants to do with her life. I think there could be other competitors to the life of the fetus in the future.

The link today discusses new research in extending the life of humans. One source says there are some 70,000 Americans over 100 years old. A scientist predicts that some years from now the first person to live to the age of 150 will be celebrated. The science allowing this will come from medicine or treatments that allow cells of old people to regenerate just as do the cells of babies. The human body now declines in its ability to regenerate or heal as the years pass.

The link discusses use of stem cells to turn on this ability to regenerate instead of decline as we age. It does not discuss abortion as the source of these stem cells but I don't know that there is another source.

Suppose this technology continued to advance and millions of wealthy old people began buying this stem cell technique.  And then suppose there was a big shortage of stem cells. Young women might be paid to become pregnant just so they could have abortions and the stem cells could be harvested.

I'm not saying this is a good or bad prospect or that it will or will not come about. What I am saying is that stem cell research is ongoing.

And, I'm saying the moral case against abortion is so weak other arguments for saving or extending lives by using stem cells will ultimately carry the day.
