Millions of Hindus Give Their All

Understanding why anyone holds religious convictions is hard for some of us. Since I grew up as a practicing Christian I understand somewhat people who follow that faith. We know people in other cultures think Christianity is a fake religion.

One thing that is not hard to see, at least for an outsider, is that all faiths basically are the same. All believe their faith is the absolute truth and that all others are fake or false. All feel close to their god and believe those who feel close to another god do so because they are being tricked or are gullible. In Christianity there are many factions who look down with disgust on other factions.

We have lots of reinforcement in the U.S. on our narrow Christian focus. Each year, for example, the press dutifully covers anti abortion events. The press does not include a disclaimer that anti abortion participants believe the fertilized egg is a human being even though there is no reason, other than religion, to believe such a thing.

Christmas and Easter are discussed in the press often referring to the Jesus birth and death as historical facts. In other parts of the world this gets eye roll.

Other huge religious events around the world are not covered mostly. Only the BBC covered a pilgrimage under way just now in India. Devout Hindus walk across several states to reach the Ganges River, thought to be divine. The pilgrimage is based on what is probably a mythical story of a holy man being healed by drinking Ganges water.

This marathon pilgrimage seems no more strange to me than protesting abortion for 40 days straight.
Each group has some religious concept in its head and can focus on little else.

  1. Thanks to all who stop in and look at my blog. After some confusion when Area Voices was closed the number of visits here has returned to what it was in earlier days. Much appreciated.
