Finally Someone Listened to Me



Some months ago I wrote about the protests of professional football players who went to one knee instead of standing during the national anthem. We all know by now they were protesting what they believe to be mistreatment of black people by police in several cities.

I said at the time this opportunity to protest was created by those showmen who owned the football franchises. They wanted the National Anthem ritual to establish football as an American sport and that somehow watching it was good citizenship. If owners did not want players using it for their own purposes owners could simply stop the practice of playing it before their games.

As television viewing of all kinds has fallen, so has viewing of professional football games. Loss of viewers reduces advertising revenue. The sport's popularity also has been hurt, so I've read, by the frequent head injury of players.

Now ESPN has read my blog and is acting on my advice. It will no longer give camera coverage to the National Anthem ceremony. That time will be spent rolling advertisements.

Of course, no one at ESPN has ever read or heard of my blog. The company sees, however, that ceremonies like the National Anthem belong to everyone and when the opportunity arises others will take advantage just as the owners were doing.

People are not always pleased to have either religion or patriotism inserted when and where is does not belong.

    Protest is meant to be "uncomfortable." White privilege doesn't have the word "uncomfortable" in their vocabulary. If I were black, I'd find the most uncomfortable thing for white people to look at or listen to. That's the way it worked when I protested on campus 45 years ago; that's the way it works now.

      I agree as well. ALL citizens have the right to protest in several ways, its guaranteed by the Constitution and our African American brothers and sisters need to be respected for the great people they are. Nothing angers me more than shirt sleeve patriotism, it allows bigots to hide their real intention to preserve white society for themselves and their cohorts.

Who Suffers from a "Hardened Heart"

Some years ago on this blog there was a discussion about what the Bible calls "The hardened heart." The "hardened heart" was the explanation given for why people like me cannot accept the tenets of Christianity. We are unable to believe there are floating spirits and gods or imaginary places people go when the die. Now, a prominent Christian preacher and author has given us a way to diagnose the "hardened heart." It contained some surprises.  Rev. John Piper, who spoke about the hardened heart, said we can see this in a person who lacks "ordinary tenderness and compassion." He went on to describe the characteristics of a person without the affliction of the hardened heart. A healthy person displays empathy and sympathy. Those with the hardened heart are like stone. Young Women can see Bull$hit a Mile Away

Republicans including their Forced Birth subgroup is bother by recent election results and polling. All show young women going to the left. A poll shows young women are 30% more likely to be very liberal than young men. The link advises the Forced Birth community to give young pregnant women an uplifting message. The message suggested is, "Buck up. You've got this. You can give birth and have a happy life." Another way of saying this is, "It will be OK if you miss work and/or are fired because of the birth. If you cannot make your rent payment, it's OK. Somewhere out there is another place to live. We don't know where but be optimistic."   This is an add on to the new version of the Forced Birth message, "We're for both the baby and the mother." They are not and never have been for the mother.
