The Most Important Reason Women Have Abortions

When anti abortion people portray women who have abortions they do it with a back handed comment, "These are abortions of inconvenience. Women do not want to face the consequences of the sex they enjoyed."

A New York Times survey asked women why they do not have any children or if they have children why they do not have more. Their answers have little to do with inconvenience. They are mostly about economics. There is a price tag associated with having children. It is to high to buy.

We all know that what it costs to raise a child varies according to how much parents can or want to spend. The minimum number is around $100,000 to age 18. If this is the number we want to use, not terminating a pregnancy costs a woman $100,000. Terminating a pregnancy it like a gift of $100,000. No wonder most couples use birth control and women are determined to get abortions.

Those opposed to abortion spend their time on the wrong issue. They spend their time telling women the fetus is a human being. It has little to no effect on the number of abortions. Instead, abortion protesters should spend their taking the $100,000 bill off the backs of women. Addressing the right issue might influence some women away from abortion.

Anti abortion operatives will not do this, however. They want women to suffer for their sin of sex. The $100,000 is part of the punishment.

So long as abortion is a religious issue the numbers will remain large, even though better birth control is bringing them down. When women are punished for being pregnant instead of rewarded we can expect they will react as they have since time began--terminating pregnancies.

Back when children worked on farms they added more the family income than they took out. Couples had many children. Off the farm they are no longer a source of revenue and couples have fewer.

Numbers of children always has been and continues to be decided on economics. To pretend otherwise is folly.
