Shortly Argentina Will Vote on Legalized Abortion

At this moment, abortion is not legal in Argentina. The lower house in Argentina has approved making abortion legal. Shortly its Senate will vote yes or no. Abortion rights have done well in Latin America and in Ireland. Predictably, the Bishop of Argentina made a statement about the rights of fetuses but said nothing about the rights of women.

The pattern for approval of abortion is so obvious it can be called self evident. When the percentage of women who are the main family breadwinners increases support for abortion rights increases also. Women are a large part of the workforce in Argentina.

Statistics show that the percentage of women in the workforce of Argentina has been increasing rapidly and is now 40%. Women are the primary breadwinners in 1/3 of Argentine households. I am not predicting the outcome of the Argentine Senate vote. I am saying legalized abortion will come to Argentina sooner or later.

Making endless proclamations that fetuses have unique DNA, fingers, heartbeats and whatever do not reduce the number of abortions. Unless religious leaders who are hung up on abortions start recognizing the roll of women in the abortion decision they will only suffer continuous defeat. The Bishop of Argentina seems to think decisions about abortion depend on what he thinks rather than how food will be put on the table in Argentine households.

Religious leaders make a mistake by claiming abortions are for the "convenience" of women. The reason for most abortions is a force far more powerful than "convenience." It is the force of economics.

These religious leaders, then, are going to war but they do not know who their enemy is. Unless they adopt a battle plan that helps women with their economic dilemmas these religious leaders are just whistling in the wind.

  1. Perhaps the Catholic Bishops in Argentina are speaking Christ's Gospel message of love for the primary victim of abortion, the baby.

Perhaps atheists and anti-theists will start helping the Bishops and Catholic Charities help the mothers, fathers and families of these babies.

Help us a little here. Where in the Bible does it say specifically Jesus thought the primary victim of abortion is the fetus?

If the Bible doesn't say what someone says it says, we are all free to make up and/or provide any conclusion we want. For example, since Jesus never said a word about homosexuality, I've concluded he did not think it was a sin. Since Jesus never said he favored the fetus over the woman's economic well being, I can conclude he thought the fetus came in second and Jesus did not want the woman losing pay while taking time off a birth. Without something definite, it's make up your own Jesus.

  3. Perhaps if most of the anti-abortion crowd weren't also against contraception and comprehensive sex education, the rest of us could have a rational discussion of the issue?
