Christianity in Today's Society, "It's not a good fit."

The steady decline of belief in Christianity continues to be written about along with ideas about how to reverse the trend. As everyone interested in the topic knows, there is tension between those who want to change the faith to accommodate changes in society and those who think changing the faith, at least their particular version of it, is abandoning it altogether. Prominent evangelical Russell Moore has written another good piece explaining his take on the declining faith.

There is an old saying, "You can't fit a round peg in a square hole." Most Christians don't believe there can be such a thing as a round hole. They are convinced the hole is square but the hole just doesn't know it. If the hole is told over and over, "You are round, just read the Bible. It says you are round." This will make the hole round.

Surely, it is undeniable religions are born to fit the culture they are born into. I know that is hard to accept if one is convinced the Christian God is sovereign. Is it impossible to accept that all the pagan and Greek gods were thought to be sovereign? No god, including the Christian one, is sovereign. They all are dependent on the human mind to stay alive.

Neither I nor anyone knows exactly where the culture and collective values are going. We can see, however, Christianity is declining in Western societies. This decline tells us society and Christianity are not in sync. Pundits on Christian sites give us the solution, pound society back to where it once was and everything will be proper once again.

If Christianity and society are once again to be on the same page, religion has to change. Society is a ship that cannot be steered by religion. Every week, many thousands of preachers/priests stand before their congregations and tell of the wrong direction society is headed. All of these sermons taken together do not change a thing.

A logical question from a Christian would be, "How can we change when we know the truth?" The answer can be summed up in one word, humility. Christians should have the humility to admit they do not know the "truth" any better than any other person or any other religion.
